Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

Decipher why Men Play Video games.

It is an amazing deduction of absolute brillant insight. It makes me want to go watch all 9 or whatever seasons of America's Top Model/The Tyra Banks Show AND X-play on g4.

And I am totally serious..really.

Click here to watch the clip

Since most of the forum lurkers here are male, I thought you all would love to see it

BTW, I wasn't sure if I should put this in the humor section or entertainment..I opted for Entertainment. Move it to humor if you wish heh.

My favorite line? "Your 23 not 13."

Thank you Tyra....I don't think I'll ever play another game again after this! Because I want to touch someone..for real..instead of yelling touchdown!

RPG Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

I was disappointed Morgan Webb, hostess of a gaming show on a gaming channel (X-play on G4) didn't stand up for us guys more and tell the audience that gaming is entertainment and there's nothing wrong with it. Women do whatever they do for entertainment, and some guys play games -- deal with it.

Yeah, DJ, the "You're 23 not 13" line Tyra said pretty much sums up how a lot of non-gamers feel about gaming -- that it's for kids and therefore something that should be given up after a certain point. It's too bad no one argued against that in the segment.

For me, gaming is about community, interacting with, and playing against others online, and just having fun. Also, there is a lot of satisfaction for me in solving a puzzle or problem in a game, whether it's safely navigating a level in N+ or breaching and clearing a room with my squad without killing any hostages in Rainbow Six Vegas.

Sad Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

PS -- because of this clip, Morgan Webb has lost some of her hotness.

At least for me, part of what made her so attractive was thinking she understood us gaming geeks. Now it seems she bows down before the "all-knowing" Tyra.

Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

Yah I agree. One of the comments said "Welcome to 1981 and their views on gaming."

What is really funny is that this is increasingly a minority view on gaming; heck my 53 year old mom thought Tyra was full of it.

Ms. Webb makes me think that she is just on G4 for the money and exposure, not really a gamer. I mean those 3 ways of telling your man by what he games he plays?

Final Fantasy 7..Men cry at that. it is just a silly game!

heh. What happens if you primarily play Kirby in Super Smash Bros Brawl? You like to beat up fictional mascots and you really suck?

She was never my favorite female from the ol' tech tv days. I miss tech/zd tv btw.

And one more thing before I go to work: Tyra Banks made her name as a Model. THAT is a highly intelligent profession that everyone looks up too and totally is a good role model for our daughters.

Really.

*coughs*

Oh and I never thought Ms. Webb was hot. She always seemed to fake for me...but I understand: Women that get it are hot.

Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

I just had a discussion with a female friend of mine, who dates a gamer and who isn't a gamer, and she is in agreement with this clip. She doesn't seem to see how insulting it is to gamers and men in general.

Which kind of surprised me, since she says she tries to keep an open mind about things. She doesn't see that the generalizations in this piece are just that or how really condescending the whole piece is. She says there is truth to what Ms. Webb says and I don't see it really cause i'm a male gamer.

Makes me wonder what her boyfriend is like. Seriously.

Maybe I'm lucky to be surrounded by the type of gamer friends I have. I mean if this is the image that women see? sheez. Nothing like pop culture psychology.

I figured out what really bothers me about this clip: It basically degrades me as a man. The piece says if your playing a game you are child and really don't know what you are doing, but hey women need men so they have to figure out how to deal with it. But, if the man just grows up a little, then things will be good. Games are for kids silly rabbit!

It insults the intelligence and decision making skills of adult males.

And that is what burns me about it; especially with all the positive manly role models I see that are hard core gamers.

Ah well, I guess that's enough on this subject

Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

ok first off...
Why the HELL do people (in this case the GUY) go on show like this where people are going to GRILL them?

Secondly - he was a gamer when they met... err you expected him to CHANGE?

Thirdly - I wonder how often they do the nasty.. may sound perverse, but really, if she isn't keeping HIS attention then maybe this is his outlet.

Fourthly - he is obviously using this as a form of networking at work. His bosses and coworkers are also gamers.

And lastly, have you noticed how this world is quickly becoming a "Women's World"?? Men are critizied for EVERYTHING. We can DO nothing right anymore. Women screw up, flutter their eyelashes and all is wonderful. A man screws something up and he is roasted alive. Women want equality, but at the same time they want chilvery (sp?), you can't have it both ways! Since the gender revolution, men are quickly becoming 2nd class citizens. For example, (you want equality) - how many scholarships are available for WOMEN that want to go into Engineering? TONS - companies want that. Why? Because their is an inproportionate ratio of men to women in the engineering field. Ok, so where do MEN catch a break? We don't. If you want equality, then a scholarship should be put up for the best PERSON, not being gender specific. (but I digress... I've gotten off on a bunny trail here...)

When did Morgan Webb get a Gamer Psychology Degree??

Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

heck yah..

Preach it Brother Tiger!

And I'd have to agree.

I know why he comes on this show, btw: money

They get paid for coming on.

Have you ever seen saving silverman? This relationship reminds me a bit of that one....

Re: Watch as Tyra Banks and Morgan Webb

Hopefully as time progresses, people will see that games just aren't necessarily for kids anymore. They are a legitimate form of entertainment for adults. People only have to look to the Asian countries to see that video games' dominance as a form of entertainment can be accepted by a culture. I think we've come a long way from Atari and Pacman. Video games dominate movie sales now. They are starting to finally get some credible media attention. These are the death throes of an dying public view (though still somewhat in the majority - at least culturally speaking) that is threatened by the change this type of entertainment suggests. The people who attack it, don't understand it.

We really didn't get to find out just how much this guy really plays a day aside from a couple hours. Well that could be a couple TV shows. Now if he's playing 10 hours a day and completely ignoring his life around him, he has issues. Gaming, as with just about anything, can go into the addiction extreme. With that said though, this is a talk show, and as with most talk shows, is little more than mindless static.

As for Morgan Webb being involved in this... shame on her for allowing the kind of trash that Tyra spilled forth to go on uncontested. The whole bit on dividing your man up into 3 different gamer types was just blatant stereotyping and was humorous at best.

The thing is, the talk show IS just static..to you and I. But, as my conversation with my female friend shows us, many people will look at it and go "Wow this woman speaks greatness!" My friend didn't see how much this segment belittled people; in fact I think just talking to her about it may have put a little bit of a dent in our friendship. I know I lost a little respect for her over this, because she was so ready to accept that these people speak truth. *that* is what bothers me: We can say it is just a talk show and shouldn't be paid attention to (really it shouldn't) but people do pay attention to it. And this friend, as I said (I think) isn't of the 'normal' population: She belly dances, goes to ren faires, and raises wolves.

If we can't get soemone like that to see that it is all BS, man how many people buy into it?

(Then again, I think my friend has some bitterness towards men she isn't letting go.)

However, on the flip side, my 53 year old mom thinks this clip is BS so...kind of opposite of what I expected.

You are right we are fighting to be seen as real people in the main stream (heh..*imagines a geek "Get on the Bus" type movie..that would be funny!*) but there will always be hold outs.

We are sneaky though, no body is expecting game players to control everything..and they are getting into those positions

way to pwn n00bz, w00t!
